The Role of Astrocytes in Cerebral Ischemia

Abstract

Astrocytes are morphologically and functionally heterogeneous neuroglial cells, which one common function is the maintaining of homoeostasis in central nervous system (CNS). The studies of the past decades concentrated on single mechanisms of ischemic injury and were not successful in the development of effective therapeutic approaches. Therefore, the search for therapeutic targets involved in multiple pathways of ischemic damage could be a promising approach. Because of their multiple regulatory functions in the CNS, astrocytes should be considered as a potential therapeutic target in ischemic stroke. In addition to their role in the sustainment of normal neuronal function, astrocyted can also mediate certain pathological processes in cerebral ischemia by secretion of neurotoxic agents and activation of inflammatory pathways.
