Abstract

The superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS), also known as Wilkie’s syndrome, when it is promptly diagnosed has a good prognosis. It is a rare condition that causes intestinal occlusion, which is misdiagnosed and even given to the patient a psychiatric diagnosis. A delayed diagnosis could implicate serious complications, such as hydroelectrolyte imbalance, gastric/duodenal perforation and renal failure.
