The Physiological Mechanism of Extracellular CalciumSensing Receptor Action in the Regulation of Vascular Tone and Blood Pressure

Abstract

Calcium is the fifth most abundant element in the adult human body. The free ionized calcium (Ca2+) is responsible for a variety of physiological processes and tightly maintained mainly by action of calciotropic hormones and other nutrients. Calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR/CaR) is a cell-surface receptor that responds to, or “senses,†extracellular Ca2+ concentrations in parathyroid, kidney and other tissues. The aim of the review is to get into the fine details of physiologic mechanisms responsible for extracellular calcium-sensing receptor actions in the regulation of vascular tone and blood pressure.
