Abstract

Severe Acute Malnutrition [SAM] is a major public health problem that is associated with very high rates of morbidity and mortality and threatens the life of millions of children yearly around the world. SAM is the most visible form of acute malnutrition that requires urgent treatment to survive. The management of SAM is critical for child survival and is a key cost-effective component of the scaling up nutrition framework for addressing undernutrition. The goals of SAM preventive strategies are to prevent short-term mortality, achieve sustained nutritional recovery to reduce susceptibility to life-threatening infections and to support neurocognitive development. Successful management of SAM requires the treatment interventions be complemented with preventive interventions aimed at addressing the root causes of malnutrition. SAM can be prevented and treated with the right nutrition responses that are key in reducing morbidity and mortality in affected populations.
