Abstract

Scott A. J. Patterns of development in the furniture industry of Thailand: organization, location and trade, Regional Studies. A geographic description of the Thai furniture industry is offered. The locational structure and performance of the industry are then analysed on the basis of original questionnaire data. The investigation proceeds by means of linear discriminant analysis in which it is shown that manufacturers located in the Bangkok agglomeration are significantly more flexible in their operations and more likely to produce design-intensive outputs than those located elsewhere. The relations between exporting activities and intra-firm upgrading are assessed. Producers in the Bangkok agglomeration are especially susceptible to process and product upgrading. The institutional underpinnings of the Thai furniture industry's modest but definite success in contesting international markets are reviewed.
