Quantifying walking capability: a novel aggregated index based on spatial perspective and analyses

Abstract

Urbanization and modernization of services in the world triggers decrement in the physical activities of citizens. The most common solution for this decrement is improving walking capacity in neighborhoods to engage the citizens in walking activity. In this research, a novel model is presented to quantify walkability based on several necessary criteria and indicators considering the physical and non‐physical conditions. For this model, promising sciences, including GIS, RS, and MCDM, are utilized to compute indicators and aggregate them in the form of a spatial index in a central region of Tehran, Iran, at the neighborhood scale. For evaluating the result, the obtained walkability level is compared to the physical structure of neighborhoods, previous works, housing price along with some other socio‐economic parameters, and municipal action plan in the neighborhoods. These evaluations show that the outcome of the proposed model is a robust tool for walkability planning. La urbanización y la modernización de los servicios en el mundo provocan la disminución de la actividad física de los ciudadanos. La solución más común para esta disminución es mejorar la transitabilidad en los barrios para que los ciudadanos participen en actividades que les hagan caminar. En esta investigación se presenta un modelo novedoso para cuantificar la transitabilidad en base a varios criterios e indicadores necesarios que consideran las condiciones físicas y no físicas. En este modelo se utilizan ciencias prometedoras, como (por sus siglas en inglés) GIS, RS y MCDM, con las que calcular indicadores que se agregaron en forma de índice espacial en una región central de Teherán (Irán) a escala de barrio. Para evaluar el resultado, se comparó el nivel obtenido de la transitabilidad con la estructura física de los barrios, las obras anteriores, el precio de la vivienda junto con algunos otros parámetros socioeconómicos, y el plan de acción municipal en los barrios. Estas evaluaciones muestran que el resultado del modelo propuesto es una herramienta rigurosa para la planificación de la transitabilidad. 世界の都市化とサービスの近代化は、市民の身体活動の低下を引き起こす。この市民の身体活動の低下に対する最も一般的な解決策は、近隣地域における歩行能力を改善して市民を歩行活動に従事させることである。本研究では、物理的および非物理的条件を考慮した必要な基準と指標に基づく、歩行能力を定量化する新しいモデルを提示する。このモデルでは、GIS、RS、およびMCDMなどの有望な科学を利用して指標を計算し、イラン、テヘランの中心地域における空間指標の形で、近隣地域の規模でそれらの指標を集約する。得られた歩行能力のレベルを、いくつかの他の社会経済的パラメータと共に近隣地域の物理的構造、既存の研究結果、住宅価格、および近隣地域の自治体の行動計画と比較して結果の評価を行った。評価の結果から、提案したモデルの結果が歩行可能性の計画のための妥当なツールであることが示される。
