Metaverse: Hype oder "next big thing"? : Potenziale und Erfolgsbedingungen

Abstract

Nicht erst seitdem sich der Facebook-Konzern im Oktober 2021 in Meta umbenannt hat, gewinnt das Thema Metaverse ganzheitlich an Bedeutung. Auch Erfahrungen aufgrund der Coronapandemie haben in hohem Maße digitale Anwendungen beflügelt. Im Kern beschreibt die Vision des Metaverse den Übergang von "flachen" Medien in 2D, die sich primär auf das Gesehene auf einem Bildschirm beschränken, zu immersiv erlebten Medien in 3D, durch die Personen zunehmend in virtuelle Welten eintauchen und virtuelle Inhalte oder Umgebungen als real empfunden werden. Das Metaverse ist eine persistente und immersive simulierte 3D-Welt, in der verschiedene nutzende Personen gleichzeitig miteinander interagieren, um Unterhaltung zu genießen, Transaktionen über Kryptowährungen abzuwickeln oder remote zu arbeiten. Handlungen im Metaverse zwischen verschiedenen nutzenden Personen geschehen synchron und in Echtzeit, es gibt eine Interoperabilität zwischen verschiedenen Anwendungen. Mit seinen Features Dreidimensionalität, Persistenz, Echtzeit und Interoperabilität wird das Metaverse als "nächste logische Stufe des Internets" und als "next big thing" angesehen.
