Abstract

[EN] To properly evaluate inflation developments, understanding the course of price changes in subgroups and the contribution of these changes to monthly and annual headline inflation are of crucial importance. TURKSTAT’s decision to release the weights of items in the CPI after 2012 increased the importance of contribution calculations. The simplest method to calculate the contribution of a product group on headline CPI is to multiply the related weight and inflation. However, in this case the structure of the index and the nature of the published data may lead to misleading results. On this note, a detailed description of the contribution calculation methods is presented.
