How to Give a Good Research Presentation: Three Essential Elements

Abstract

This annotated presentation presents three basic guidelines for giving a compelling research presentation. First, use the introduction to create a gap in knowledge, which the research will then fill. Second, make kinetic slides, which allow the audience to anticipate some of the causal connections to be established in the formal analysis. Third, let the visual slides, the written paper, and the spoken narrative act as complements, not substitutes, giving each a unique role suitable to their form. Currently, these guidelines are routinely violated in research presentations, limiting their interest and effectiveness.
