Abstract

In this paper we analyze the impact that production, consumption and trade relations have on water resources in the Spanish economy. Specifically, we study, taking as a reference the 1995-2016 horizon, the water consumption in Spain associated with the productive and sectorial structure of the country, and its international links through the global production chains. With this objective, we use extended environmental multi-regional input-output modeling, through which it is possible to quantify the main trends and productive and regional patterns that help us explain the evolution of the consumptive use of water resources during the last two decades.
