Abstract

La Loi Le Chapelier (1791) n’est pas seulement la loi qui a aboli les corporations de métier, mais aussi le droit pour les ouvriers de s’organiser ou de faire grève. La loi fut rapidement votée, presque sans débats, ni opposition. Pourquoi cette loi qui transforma pendant plusieurs décennies l’organisation du travail (en premier lieu pour la classe ouvrière) et de la production fut-elle votée si rapidement ? L’objet de ce travail est de décrire les rapports de forces qui se sont manifestés dans un contexte politique troublé, mais marqué par un début d’industrialisation. The Le Chapelier Law is the law which not only abolished guilds, but also ushered in workers’ rights to create trade unions or to go on strike. The law was voted through quickly, almost without debate, and against negligible opposition. Why was this law, which brought long-term changes to labour organization in France (and also improved the lot of the working classes), voted so rapidly and so easily? The aim of this paper is to provide an explanation of the balance of power between the different social classes in a climate of political unrest (the French Revolution) which was also characterized by thestart of industrialization
