Abstract

The entrepreneur's come-back is notably based on Schumpeter's writings. The dynamic of capitalism is therefore founded on innovation, a function assumed, according to Schumpeter, by the entrepreneur. However, the economic agent can also achieve other tasks. This paper links the entrepreneur's function with the economic agent who plays this role, that is to say, the agent-entrepreneur. Schumpeter describes the working of competitive capitalism carried along by individual agent-entrepreneurs. Innovation requires the overcoming of routine and, on the whole, of the brakes which hinder new developments. The entrepreneur is an individual with exceptional capacities and non-economic motives. But evolution transforms capitalism and entrepreneurs. Competitive capitalism is replaced by trustified capitalism, dominated by big corporations. Then, socialism becomes the presumed heir of capitalism, dead because of its success. The Agent-entrepreneur changes as society evolves. Nevertheless, Schumpeter's work give rise to critical issues, especially concerning the role of States, the place of risk and uncertainty and finally of big companies.
