Abstract

The main intention of this paper is to show how science, technology, R&D and hi-tech innovations in production and trade can lead to expansion of exports and change foreign trade status of a country from net importer to net exporter. The paper is divided into three general units. The first is a review of how the use of new technology can obtain competitive advantage in international trade. The second section provides an empirical analysis of how hi-tech helped the newly industrialized countries in East and Southeast Asia to become "export tigers". The third part is a comparative analysis of economies of both South Korea and North Korea. It compares modern capitalist way of doing business by applying hi-tech vis-à-vis socialist economic order. The methods of statistical data analysis, comparative analysis and method of deduction are widely used in the paper.
