Abstract

This article reconstructs the genesis of the reading that turned sixteenth-century Spanish scholastics into precursors of the Austrian School. Using the category of elective traditions (Fernández Sebastián, 2021), it follows two chains between 1943 and 1995, one running from Larraz's national-Catholic historiography to Rothbard, through Dempsey, Schumpeter, Grice-Hutchinson and Hayek, and another running from Popescu and the Universidad Católica Argentina to Chafuen. The successive readings of Juan de Mariana show the political malleability of scholastic texts. The connection was not an inheritance within the school but a gradual reworking across the twentieth century, answering to the political and doctrinal debates of each context.
