The Essential Role of Sociology in Designing AI Systems That Promote Economic Fairness

Author

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) may be regarded as a grandchild of computer science and sociology as the science of society. From its inception, a confluence of various disciplines has shaped the understanding of AI. It is probably safe to say that only a small number of computer scientists and practically no sociologists can imagine comprehending AI without understanding the inner workings of the black box or the effects of the use of data on “learning.” On the other hand, the best sociologists have noticed long ago that society is full of algorithms.
