Productividad y costos operativos en las instituciones microfinancieras peruanas reguladas

Abstract

Las instituciones microfinancieras (IMFs) enfrentan el reto de reducir sus elevados costos operativos. Una mayor productividad puede contribuir a superar este desafío, al optimizar el uso de recursos y mejorar la eficiencia operativa. Aunque la productividad de las IMFs ha sido ampliamente estudiada, son escasos los trabajos que analizan su efecto sobre sus costos operativos. Este estudio analiza la relación entre la productividad y los costosoperativos de las IMFs reguladas en el Perú en el período 2004-2021, a fin de determinar en qué medida las mejoras en la productividad contribuyen a reducir dichos costos. Para ello, se estima el índice de productividad de Malmquist y se obtienen sus componentes según la descomposición propuesta por Ray y Desli (1997). Asimismo, se estima un modelo de datos de panel con variables instrumentales para identificar el efecto de la productividad sobre los costos operativos. Los resultados evidencian que la productividad promedio de las IMFs peruanas se ha mantenido relativamente constante en el periodo analizado. De otro lado, se encuentra que un incremento del 1% en la productividad de las IMFs está asociado a una reducción de aproximadamente 5% en sus costos operativos.
