Pandemia de COVID-19 y salud perinatal en 2020: el caso de Uruguay

Abstract

Utilizando datos de nacimientos nacionales evaluamos los efectos de la pandemia de COVID-19 durante 2020 sobre los resultados de los nacimientos en Uruguay. Empleando técnicas de diferencia en diferencias, encontramos resultados mixtos, con algunos embarazos que muestran aumentos en la probabilidad de partos muy prematuros o de muy bajo peso y otros que muestran disminuciones en la incidencia del bajo peso al nacer y pequeños para la edad gestacional. Los resultados adversos son más probables entre mujeres con bajo nivel educativo, multíparas y con factores de riesgo, como fumar o tener 35 años o más. Observamos mejoras en la salud al nacer de los hijos de no fumadoras, menores de 35 años y primigestas. La crisis económica, el aumento de la carga del cuidado infantil en el hogar y el menor acceso a la atención prenatal son posibles mecanismos detrás de los resultados adversos. Los resultados positivos probablemente se deban a un estilo de vida más tranquilo y saludable, asociado a los niveles reducidos de movilidad.
