Abstract

In this paper the deterrnining factors of the diffusion intensity of the automatic teller machines (ATM) in the Cajas de Ahorros Confederadas Españolas (CECA) are analyzed, using panel data for the 1985-1990 period. It develops a theoretical model of technology adoption in presence of network extemalities, in view of their relevance for the functional character of ATMs. Empirical results show the positive effect of the market size, the size of the competing network of ATMs and finally the size of the banking firm on the diffusion intensity of ATMs. Also, it is shown the significant and negative effect of market concentration and banks profitability on such intensity.
