Improving Early Childhood Development Outcomes in Times of COVID-19: Experimental Evidence on Parental Networks and SMS Messages

Abstract

Este documento describe un experimento implementado en Costa Rica para aumentar el aprendizaje de estudiantes del nivel preescolar durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Aprovechando las redes existentes de padres, estudiamos el efecto directo de ser seleccionado para recibir los mensajes de texto SMS, así como los efectos indirectos de ser parte de una red de padres. Los mensajes de texto se enviaron a los padres o apoderados de los niños y niñas con el objetivo de apoyar su aprendizaje en el hogar. Después de 15 semanas de intervención, las habilidades cognitivas de los niños cuyos padres y apoderados recibieron los mensajes de texto aumentaron entre 0.11 y 0.12 desviaciones estándar. El efecto es explicado por un aumento de la participación de los padres y apoderados a través de las actividades propuestas en la mensajería de texto. No se encontró evidencia de que la información se transfiriera de unos padres a otros en una misma red.
