Abstract

This study explores how gender, in combination with ethnic origin, influences the information provided by recruiters of master's-level higher education programs in France. In 2022, master's programs of French universities were tested by sending simple requests for information from fictitious students to the program managers. We find no significant overall gender-based differences in the treatment of applicants. However, the results suggest a difference in ease of access for women to science and technology master's programs compared to arts, literature and languages programs. We also observe a significant penalty against applicants of North African origin.
