Abstract
Comment faire en sorte que le développement économique d'un pays dure dans le temps ? Un des meilleurs moyens d'assurer une croissance durable réside dans l'éducation de la population. Lorsque les familles investissent davantage dans l'instruction de leurs enfants, ceux-ci disposent ensuite de meilleures chances de travailler, de produire, d'innover et de transmettre à leur tour ces compétences. Or, dans les sociétés anciennes, les familles disposaient de moyens limités et ne pouvaient pas toujours investir autant qu'elles l'auraient souhaité dans chaque enfant. Elles faisaient donc face à un arbitrage simple : avoir davantage d'enfants, ou en avoir moins afin de consacrer plus de ressources à chacun. Pendant longtemps, la quantité l'emportait. Cependant au cours du développement économique, dans de nombreuses sociétés les couples ont commencé à avoir moins d'enfants et à consacrer davantage de ressources à chacun d'eux. La question est donc simple : qu'est-ce qui pousse une famille à choisir moins d'enfants, mais mieux éduqués ? Dans un article consacré à l'Arménie du XIXe siècle, Sinara Gharibyan, David Gomtsyan et Èric Roca Fernández étudient une piste précise : le rôle de la mortalité. Leur idée est intuitive. Quand les enfants ont plus de chances de survivre, et quand les adultes peuvent espérer vivre plus longtemps, l'éducation devient un investissement plus intéressant car les efforts consentis aujourd'hui ont davantage de chances de porter leurs fruits demain et pendant plus longtemps.
