Abstract

Over the decades, the universe of the Special economic zones has become considerably more complex. Among them, free zones continue to occupy a central place because of their particular derogatory advantages and their export vocation. The first objective of this article is to provide a very complete terminological clarification in order to be able to identify free zones more easily among all the existing types of zones. In a second step, this article will propose an unprecedented and almost exhaustive overview of free zones by major geographical areas and will explain why the contrasts are so important between countries. An original typology of the situations observed by groups of countries will finally be built on the basis of common characteristics, in order to better understand the economic logic at work.
