Abstract

This article reports on a research project examining how childcare provision affects parents' employment patterns and fertility choices. Based on criteria such as the level of public funding, the real coverage rate of the childcare system, its cost and the number of carers available to relieve parents' caring tasks, European countries are ranked by the degree of family-friendliness and supportiveness of their childcare provision for the dual-earner model and for women combining professional responsibilities with motherhood.
