Abstract

This article deals with the politics of placement on for executive boards of the American non-profit business world. Whether placement policies are decided by corporate staff or by external service providers, they lie at the heart of an evolution in American philanthropy towards a more strategic approach. Sitting on an executive board of a non-profit organization can boost one's social capital in both the corporate and philanthropic worlds; the selection process is thus very competitive. As a result, non-profit board placement policies tend to reproduce the social composition of executive boards. Moreover, they contribute to the alignment of non-profit missions with corporate interests.
