Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to implement a performance analysis of the touristics territories by means of the efficiency of the hospitality sector. 16 French agglomerations are analysed through three categories of hospitality : the mid-price, the economy and the budget categories. A hierarchical category DEA model (Tone, 1997) is employed in order to take into account the heterogeneity across the categories and a production technology with inputs/outputs is built to assess the relative performance of French touristic territory. The impact of tourism attraction on efficiency level is empirically estimated. To do this, we follow an approach based on regression (McDonald, 2009). The results show that the performance of the French hospitality sector can be connected to the tourism attractions based on natural resources (Beckendorff, 2006). Policy implications and managerial recommendations for decision makers are then provided around the attraction as a source of "value" of a tourism area.
