Abstract

Les rapports entre les entreprises et la société constituent un champ qui a été peu pris en compte par les sciences sociales. Pourtant, la vie quotidienne est largement déterminée par ce que font – ou ne font pas – les entreprises. Acteurs économiques omniprésents, elles jouent également un rôle de plus en plus important dans la vie de la Cité. L'observation et l'analyse de ces rapports, tant du point de vue de la société que de l'entreprise, s'imposent dans un contexte de mutations profondes des cadres de vie et d'évolution des systèmes économiques. Les auteurs portent ce double regard en appréhendant les activités des entreprises sous l'angle des responsabilités qui en résultent. Ils scrutent les attentes de la société et les modes de réaction des entreprises à travers une vision sociohistorique qui en éclaire les déterminants. Face à l'approche managériale de la responsabilité sociale de l'entreprise (RSE), ils développent l'idée d'une « redevabilité » des entreprises envers la société résultant de leurs impacts sur l'environnement naturel et humain et des ressources qu'elles s'y procurent. Leur réflexion débouche sur des interrogations sur le sens, la nature, le rôle et le pouvoir de l'entreprise dans la société d'aujourd'hui.
