La persistance des écarts de richesse entre La Réunion et les standards français et européens : l'apport des tests de racine unitaire

Abstract

L'objectif de cet article est de montrer s'il existe un processus de convergence réelle entre La Réunion et les standards français et européen. Cette ancienne colonie française bénéficie, en effet, depuis son accession aux statuts de département en 1946 et de région ultrapériphérique dès 1986, d'une aide financière massive à la fois française et européenne, dont l'objectif est explicitement d'enclencher un phénomène de rattrapage en termes de niveau de vie. Nous mettons alors en œuvre, sur la période 1950-2006, une batterie de tests de racine unitaire en séries temporelles, lesquels intègrent la présence possible de ruptures structurelles, sur les écarts de PIB réel par habitant entre la Réunion et sa métropole, d'une part, et la Réunion et la moyenne européenne, d'autre part. Il apparaît finalement que les écarts de niveau de vie constatés au sortir du passé colonial se sont maintenus sur la période contemporaine. La Réunion a même plutôt tendance à diverger quelle que soit la référence considérée.
