Abstract

Cet article rappelle les objectifs du programme Johns Hopkins de comparaison internationale du secteur sans but lucratif qui a servi de cadre aux enquêtes sur le bénévolat en France et en Europe. Il rappelle d'abord les problèmes méthodologiques: définition et délimitation du travail bénévole, fiabilité des enquêtes, avantages et inconvénients de la monétarisation. Puis il analyse le bénévolat en France: niveau et formes d'engagement, destination et caractéristiques socio-démographiques des bénévoles et poids économique de ce travail gratuit.Enfin, des données sur le bénévolat dans douze pays d'Europe occidentale sont confrontées avec des données identiques pour quatre PECO et pour les Etats-Unis. Les données européennes sont enfin présentées de manière plus qualitative pour dégager quatre variantes de bénévolat européen
