La crisis del precio del arroz de 2007/08 - Cómo las políticas elevaron los precios… y cómo pueden ayudar a estabilizar los mercados

Abstract

Después de subir lenta y continuamente a partir de sus niveles mínimos históricos, los precios mundiales del arroz se triplicaron en solamente seis meses en 2007/08. El alza de precios provocó una gran ansiedad ya que una gran parte de la población pobre del mundo consume arroz. Y sorprendió a muchos, ya que los indicadores fundamentales del mercado eran sólidos. De hecho, fueron las políticas gubernamentales -más que los cambios en la producción y el consumo de arroz- las que provocaron la subida. Esto sugiere que unas mejores políticas gubernamentales pueden ayudar a evitar tales crisis en el futuro.
