Abstract

_________________________________ The women labor force participation rate has been increasing in the Togolese society where the Christian and Animist religions are dominant. However, women work mainly in the informal sector with trade being the major occupation. The significant participation of women in economic life probably impacts other aspects of their life, notably their reproduction. In fact, women most likely face difficulties coordinating their competing professional and reproductive roles. The objective of this paper is to investigate the relationships between the start of reproductive life and professional life of women. Specifically, I analyse the order in which women get their first job and the first child. What is the impact of the woman’s professional life on the timing of her first child? Conversely, what is the effect of the first childbirth on the first paid employment? The data used comes from the event history survey carried out in Lomé, the capital city in 2000.
