Abstract

****** The objective of this paper is to outline succinctly some ideas on Kenneth Arrow’s social choice theory divided into five sections. First, some issues related to the aggregation of individual preferences in a social welfare function are addressed, the following section analyse the nature of choice highlighting an axiological dimension in neoclassical theory (values play a main role in the choice process). Then we addressed the market’s functioning and its limits to solve the conflict between individual and social choice. In the fourth section, certain theoretical implications for modern macroeconomics are raised, and finally some comments on Arrow’s thought are mentioned.
