Abstract

Abstract: During the last decade, labor force participation, unemployment, under-employment and informality in the city of Ibagué have been above the average of the major cities of Colombia. These indicators show problems in that city’s labor market that could affect earnings and welfare of its workers. Based on human capital theory, we analize the earnings structure for employees and own-account workers in Ibagué, and compare it with the structure prevailing in the major cities of Colombia as a whole. Our results show that workers in Ibagué earn lower wages, and only those with higher education obtain aditional returns for more years of education. In other words, Ibagué’s labor market only ‘rewards’ —in the form of higher wages— workers with higher education for aditional increases in years of education.
