Abstract

Based on a review and examination of various secondary sources, this essay demonstrates how, during the exploitation of natural rubber between 1890 and 1921, the Peruvian Amazon Company and the Venezuelan Tomás Funes—whose personal enterprise combined paramilitary and commercial elements—established social relations of slave-based production in the Putumayo region and in the Colombian Orinoquia. These dynamics gave a hybrid character to the feudal social formation that prevailed in the country at the time. In this context, it is argued that, in the specific historical period of 1890–1921, the country’s social formation did not correspond exclusively to a “feudal” pre-capitalism, and even less could it be defined as capitalist, as Ocampo suggests.
