Abstract

In teaching general equilibrium models, microeconomics textbooks focus on ideas that can be drawn from the Edgeworth diagram for the exchange. The tools needed to mathematically analyze general equilibrium models overwhelm far fewer students than some who have developed them throughout their basic education. Here is an alternative that, while remaining rigorous, can help many more students to understand the conceptual aspects of this class of models. For this, a general equilibrium model of pure exchange is developed, which is explicitly solved, to later be developed in a spreadsheet. In this way, by changing the parameters and exogenous variables of the model, different aspects of this class of models can be explained and deepened, without the student getting lost in problematic algebraic developments.
