  • Yuri C. Reina Aranza

Yam (Dioscorea) is one of the six genera belonging to the family of Dioscoraceae and originated in Africa and Asia. In Colombia, yam production is specifically located in the Caribbean region and became a key product in the people´s diet. In 2010, Colombia was among the 12 countries with the highest yam production in the world, ranked first in terms of yields per hectare. Although its main use is for food, studies have shown that it is useful in the pharmaceutical industry and in the manufacturing of bioplastics. However, in Colombia there is no evidence of the use of this product in areas other than food.
