La ganadería bovina en las llanuras del Caribe colombiano

Abstract

La presente investigación se planteó como una forma de entender la microeconomía de la ganadería costena. En el documento se trata de responder las siguientes preguntas: cuál es la incidencia de la actividad ganadera sobre la economía de la Región Caribe?, qué alternativas tiene el uso del suelo en las Llanuras del Caribe? Durante el 2002, el hato de ganado bovino de Colombia fue de 25.000.000 cabezas, 32% de las cuales se concentraban en los departamentos del Caribe colombiano. Por su parte, la participación de la Región en la producción de leche es del 38% dentro del total nacional. En cuanto al comercio del ganado en pié, la Feria de Medellín ha venido perdiendo representatividad dentro del mercado ganadero nacional. La situación de inseguridad ha llevado a que los ganaderos impulsen esquemas de negociación que les permitan mantenerse de incógnitos, como es el caso de las subastas, convertidas en un dinámico mercado regional.
