Crecimiento Econ�mico y Concentraci�n Original del Ingreso: Experiencias Internacionales desde 1820

Abstract

De acuerdo con la hip�tesis b�sica de una nueva corriente de an�lisis del desarrollo econ�mico, el principal determinante de la brecha actual entre el ingreso per c�pita de los pa�ses desarrollados y el de los pa�ses en desarrollo que fueron colonias europeas es la concentraci�n original de la riqueza, vista tal concentraci�n como un factor que sintetiza la modalidad inicial de colonizaci�n y producci�n. En este documento sometemos a prueba la hip�tesis, que llamamos “historicista”, de una influencia negativa de la concentraci�n inicial del ingreso en el desempe�o posterior de la econom�a. Para tal prop�sito partimos de la funci�n de producci�n agregada convencional y de relaciones hipot�ticas entre los motores b�sicos del crecimiento y variables de concentraci�n del ingreso en un momento inicial y en otros posteriores. Los resultados de ejercicios panel con una muestra de pa�ses desarrollados y en desarrollo no rechazan la hip�tesis historicista cuando se mide la concentraci�n del ingreso por la participaci�n en �ste del decil m�s rico de la poblaci�n.
