Abstract

Durante varias décadas del siglo XIX Santa Marta fue el principal puerto de la Nueva Granada, por donde se movilizaba gran parte del comercio exterior del país y sus recaudos de aduana superaban ampliamente a los de Cartagena, Sabanilla y Barranquilla. El auge del comercio exterior de Santa Marta estuvo acompañado de la formación de una élite de comerciantes y empresarios asentados en la ciudad, que gozaron de prestigio tanto en la región como en otras ciudades de la Nueva Granada.
