Abstract

The use of online platforms as intermediaries between the demand for and supply of labour has grown in recent years, both in Italy and abroad. We analyse this phenomenon by providing, in particular: i) an overview of the current debate on how to regulate this sector, specifically with respect to the contractual arrangements and the set of protections to be guaranteed to the workers; ii) a review of the existing empirical evidence concerning the extent of the phenomenon and its main characteristics, both in Italy and abroad; and iii) a case study on the food delivery industry in Italy, with an analysis of the individual characteristics and careers of the delivery operators involved.
