Abstract

Ce document présente l’évaluation actuelle, par le personnel de la Banque du Canada, des taux d’intérêt neutres aux États-Unis et au Canada. Le taux neutre désigne le niveau auquel le taux directeur devrait s’établir, une fois que la production a atteint son niveau potentiel à long terme et que l’inflation est à la cible, et après que les effets de tous les chocs cycliques se sont dissipés (Mendes, 2014). La Banque ne cible pas le taux neutre, mais il s’agit d’une donnée importante pour ses projections économiques. D’après notre évaluation, le taux nominal neutre canadien se situe dans une fourchette de 2,25 à 3,25 %, soit la même fourchette que celle estimée en 2025. Nous évaluons que le taux nominal neutre américain se situe quant à lui dans une fourchette de 2,50 à 3,50 %, soit un peu plus haut que la fourchette de 2,25 à 3,25 % estimée en 2025. Au Canada, la croissance plus forte de la productivité à long terme est contrebalancée par une expansion démographique plus faible sur le long terme. La révision du taux neutre américain s’explique par des perspectives de croissance de la production potentielle plus favorables.
