Abstract

Excerpts from: Address by Secretary of Agriculture Earl L. Butz at a luncheon meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 23, 1975: In this century at least, the policies of governments rather than nature are likely to be the limiting factor in food production. It is essential that nations join together to share technology, encourage trade in products and in ideas, and to work against any revival of economic isolationism. We must abandon national programs built on a cheap food policy, and assure farmers a chance to make a reasonable profit. Then they will respond with increased production. The world can feed itself -- if it has the wisdom to do so -- to make the right choices -- set the right priorities -- make proper use of its resources. That's the job ahead of us.
