Abstract

Excerpts from the Foreword: A team of sociologists, agricultural economists, and other scientists from most Southern States and several Midwestern States are pursuing four research objectives to: (1) identify and measure characteristics of farms and related activities as organizational units; (2) assess the impacts that external variations in social, economic, and institutional factors have on farms of various sizes and types; (3) assess the impact of organizational characteristics and career commitment and well-being of individuals and families on farms; and (4) assess the development of farm size and types as related to population change, patterns of man-land relationships, and community structure. Such efforts will help to describe, predict, and explain the changes in the structure of agriculture. Once that foundation is laid, policymakers and the citizenry they represent should be better able to effectively control these changes to achieve desired directions in farming and agriculture which, in turn, play a vital role in national and international human well-being. The purpose of this bibliography is to offer references to various scientific and policy materials already available on the structure of agriculture. It is hoped that the compilation of materials will help to hasten the creation of a scientific knowledge basis for policy and its social ends.
