Abstract

Excerpts from the Foreword: The need for and the use of seasonal agricultural labor from outside certain areas of need are important characteristics of the agricultural economy of the United States. An adequate supply of such seasonal labor at the proper time is extremely important in the production of essential food and fiber crops. This survey seeks to (1) locate and map as nearly as possible the major areas requiring outside agricultural labor (see map at end of report); (2) estimate as nearly as possible the requirement for outside workers and the approximate dates of such need by areas and crops; (3) describe the workers, their source of origin, the migratory pattern generally followed, and crop or work preferences; and (4) inventory as nearly as possible the housing and other facilities which add to the comfort and welfare of a farm worker away from his home.
