Abstract

This report contains estimates of energy use in U.S. agriculture for the years T978, 1980, and 1981. The estimates presented in this report reflect information from the 1978 Census of Agriculture, the 1980 Farm Production Expenditure Survey and the Firm Enterprise Data System for 1978.1 Energy use estimates for 1981 are based on that year's crop production and invated energy data, using 1980 updated fuel use coefficients. State energy use estimates are summarized by type of farm operation under the two primary agricultural categories, crops and livestock. Total energy use in U.S. agriculture increased 7 percent from 1974 to 1978, and declined 2.4 percent from 1978 to 1980. In the later period, direct energy use in onf arm production decreased 10 percent, while invested energy use increased 12 percent. National farm energy use from 1980 to 1981 rose only slightly, 2.7 percent, while invested energy use increased 3.6 percent.
