Abstract

Excerpt from the Introduction: This report has four purposes: (1) It presents some indications of the extent of improvement in broiler production efficiency. (2) It shows the striking increase that this gain in efficiency has brought about in the live weight at which net returns per broiler are maximized. (3) It develops a price-mapping procedure to determine optimum marketing weights where producers must consider not only net returns per broiler, but the effect of production-time and floor- space limitations on the number of broilers that can be produced annually. (4) It uses this price-mapping method to show how technological change and lower broiler-feed price ratios have jointly reduced the competitive disadvantage of heavier broilers.
