Abstract

On 1 August 2009, Australian kangaroo meat exports were suspended to the Russian market. Product traceability was identified as one of the key areas requiring investigation. Systems to ensure product traceability and integrity have emerged globally as a key requirement in addressing consumer demand for a wholesome and sustainably managed meat product. In response to this emerging requirement for product traceability and verification of kangaroo meat integrity, the Queensland Kangaroo Industry Development Committee (KIDC) requested that an examination of options for traceability be undertaken. The report explores a number of options that will guarantee product traceability and verification, and looks at how the system is integrated along the supply chain and the associated costs. Six product traceability systems were proposed. In consultation with the industry and technology providers these systems were assessed on their effective cost to industry.
