Abstract

The final theme in this collection turns to the question of inclusion: how do we make technology work for everyone? For all the talk of innovation as an engine of progress, the reality is that its benefits are not distributed evenly. Technologies often carry the imprint of the societies in which they are built, reifying existing norms around class, age, gender and ethnicity. As a result, those who are already vulnerable — women, the elderly, children, and minority communities — may find themselves more exposed to online harms, algorithmic discrimination, or simply neglect…
