Abstract

This research explores the prospects for developing small and medium enterprises in the face of external challenges and state support measures for the sector. It identifies the targeted benchmarks of the national project aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and evaluates specific indicators of its implementation. The analysis examines trends in several SMEs, employment levels, and the contribution of SMEs to the national GDP. The findings indicate a positive growth in the attractiveness of these business forms and their effectiveness. While large businesses adhere to sustainable development principles, the SME sector remains outside the sustainable development agenda. The research notes that owing to their unique characteristics and advantages, small and medium enterprises are already embodying some sustainable development principles, which highlights their potential to address the economic and social challenges of today’s society. Ultimately, it concludes that there is a need to intensify state support measures to sustain the development of SMEs. The research aims to identify the key directions and indicators of the sustainable development of small and medium enterprises in Russia and propose measures that support this trend.
