Abstract

Energy security remains a pressing concern for developing economies, where the agricultural sector is particularly vulnerable due to its reliance on stable and affordable energy supplies. Solar water pumps, a solar energy innovation, present a promising solution for sustainable water management in agriculture, especially in areas with abundant solar radiation. This chapter delves into the drivers behind the adoption of solar water pumps among farmers in developing economies. Through an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, this study identifies key determinants such as performance expectancy, awareness, social influence, and facilitating conditions that shape farmers’ intentions to use solar water pumps. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the role of increased awareness of solar energy technologies, highlighting the need for targeted outreach programs to address knowledge gaps. The findings underscore the potential of solar water pumps to enhance energy security and offer actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to promote the broader adoption of sustainable technologies. This study supports efforts toward more resilient agricultural practices and long-term sustainability in energy-dependent sectors by encouraging the transition to renewable energy sources.
