Abstract

In the 1970s the British footwear industry experienced great pressure on itsoutput and prices as a result of rising imports. In the non-leather footwear sectorimports from the Far East boomed, while in leather footwear Comecon and Italyprovided much of the growth. In view of the treaty of Rome, Ilalian footwearexports to the UK could not be restricted, but the other booming suppliers weresubject to NTBs — mostly to voluntary export restraints (VERs)…
